{"hits":{"hits":[{"id":"319665","metadata":{"pid":"319665","documentType":"coar:c_7a1f","title":[{"type":"bf:Title","subtitle":[{"value":"a case study","language":"eng"}],"mainTitle":[{"value":"The impact of international experience & seniority on cultural intelligence","language":"eng"}]}],"abstracts":[{"value":"In today's diverse business environment, an important topic for international companies to understand when hiring and managing employees in a multicultural environment is Cultural Intelligence (CQ), the ability to work and relate effectively across cultures (Leung, Ang, Tan 2014). Individuals who are capable of managing, interacting, and working effectively in various inter-cultural situations are benefiting from one of the most important ability of the 21st century\u2019s business settings in the name of CQ. Based on significant empirical research within the cultural intelligence\u2019s field, this notion is assumed to be growing along with two important antecedents: the worker\u2019s international experience as well as their work seniority. The goal of this research is to investigate the previously mentioned hypothesis by applying it within the business environment of Geneva. The present report uses a quantitative-based design where 42 Multinationals Enterprise\u2019s junior and senior managers completed the expanded CQ 39 items scale to measure their cultural intelligence quotient as well as to determine the impact that both work seniority and international experience have on their CQ score. Results from an independent sample t-Test and a one-way between subject ANOVA demonstrated that junior managers scored higher on the four different CQ dimensions: Cognitive, Metacognitive, Motivational and Behavioral, compared to senior managers. However, international experience, in contradiction to previous CQ empirical research, did not impact participants CQ score. CQ sub-dimension results are also analysed and discussed. The present research underlines, at a business perspective, the crucial importance for Multinational Enterprises dealing with diverse workforces to consider and hire people coming from multi-cultural cities and who have experienced multi-culturalism from a young age rather than betting on expensive foreign staff with a lot of international experiences. Moreover, in a city like Geneva where different cultures are constantly interacting, it is feasible that individuals who grew up in such multi-cultural environment have already gained a significant amount of international experience and thus increased their CQ even without having left the city. This could be beneficial and make a significant cost and complexity reduction, for companies, in terms of business practices. In their quest of culturally smart individuals in the workplace, businesses will not have the necessity to rely on expensive inter-cultural programs and trainings to form culturally intelligent workers because these persons, who grew up in a multi-cultural environment, would be already smart in that domain and ready to work and bring their cultural intelligence within the business field.","language":"eng"}],"contribution":[{"role":["cre"],"agent":{"type":"bf:Person","preferred_name":"Guyot, Anthony"},"text":"Guyot, Anthony"},{"role":["dgs"],"agent":{"type":"bf:Person","preferred_name":"Harvey, Gareth J."},"text":"Harvey, Gareth J. Existing quality of care frameworks insufficiently integrate the perspectives of physicians, nurses and patients. We collected narrative accounts from these three groups to explore if their perspectives might add new content to these existing definitions.\nMethods. Ninety-seven descriptions of \u201cgood\u201d and \u201cpoor\u201d care episodes were collected from a convenience sample of physicians, nurses and outpatients at eight regional hospitals. Two coders classified the narrative contents into themes related to structures, processes and outcomes of care.\nResults. The physicians, nurses and patients raised the following \u201cquality of care\u201d aspects: Successful communication among staff, with patients and care companions; staff motivation; frequency of knowledge errors; prioritization of patient-preferred outcomes; institutional emphasis on building \u201cquality cultures\u201d; and organizational implementation of fluid system procedures.\nConclusion. Respondents primarily referred to care processes in their descriptions of \u201cquality of care.\u201d \u201cHippocratic pride\u201d (in response to care successes) and \u201cRapid reactivity\u201d (in response to (near) failures) emerged as two new outcome indicators of high-quality care.\nPractice implications. This study provides a first qualitative fundament for understanding the components of \u201cquality of care\u201d from a triangulated frontline perspective. Preliminary evidence in breast cancer suggests that a low AAPR correlates with a poor response to neoadjuvant chemotherapy (NAC) in primary tumors. However, data regarding the axillary response are lacking. This study aims to evaluate whether the AAPR can predict the axillary response in initially nodal-positive (cN+) breast cancer patients undergoing NAC. Materials and Methods: Clinical and biochemical variables of cN+ breast cancer patients undergoing NAC were collected. Pre-NAC albumin and alkaline phosphatase serum values were utilized in the AAPR calculation. Fisher\u2019s exact test was performed to identify differences between the two groups of patients (high and low AAPR according to the cut-off reported in the literature). The primary outcome was the nodal pathologic complete response (pCR) rate in the two groups of patients. Results: Nodal pCR was achieved in 20/45 (44.4%) patients. A total of 36/45 (80%) patients had an AAPR > 0.583. Among patient and tumor characteristics, the only statistically significant difference between the two groups was the axillary pCR between the low and high AAPR groups (p-value = 0.03, OR = 0.129, 95% CI = 0.00\u20130.835). Conclusions: This pilot study suggests that the pre-treatment AAPR might be an early predictor of axillary response in cN+ breast cancer patients undergoing NAC. It explores agents\u2019 perceptions of such  courses. The research examines the views of 304 UK-based travel agents using online survey and investigates whether age, sex, type of agency, work experience, and educational level have  influence on e-learning uptake. It will be forever associated with the tragic and preventable deaths of 346 people killed in two separate crashes within five months in 2018-2019, an extraordinary fact given the significant advances in aviation safety over the last two decades and the plane brand new certification. The 737 MAX showcase the multiple failures in how Boeing is manufacturing planes as well as how the Federal Aviation Authority (FAA) is regulating them. In both crashes, the Manoeuvring Characteristics Augmentation System (MCAS) was activated on erroneous data readings. This new system pushed the nose of the airplane down until it forced the airplane into a nose-down attitude from which the pilots were unable to recover. Even though the consequences of the activation of the MCAS lead to catastrophic consequences, pilots were unaware of its existence. This thesis explores how the design, development and regulation of the 737 MAX changed pilots\u2019 perception of the stakeholders involved in aviation safety. This exploratory study analyses three stakeholders. First, Boeing for its role in the design and production of the 737 MAX. Second, the FAA for its regulatory role. Third and mainly, pilots\u2019 perception of their role in public safety. In-depth interviews were conducted with eight pilots. First, pilots expressed a 100% trust in Boeing believing that they manufacture safe aircrafts. However, over 60% of respondents indicated that their perception of Boeing was negatively impacted by the 737 MAX. Second, 75% of pilots interviewed explained that their perception of the FAA changed, largely crediting its loss of credibility. Finally, pilots\u2019 perception of their role in public safety remained unchanged for 75% of respondents. This surprising result is explained by the fact that pilots\u2019 perception changed for other stakeholders involved in aviation safety. The double failure \u2013 Boeing lack of technicity and the FAA lack of oversight - shocked the industry. Boeing needed to design the 737 MAX to compete with Airbus A320 NEO. Both analyses focus on the same item of mathematics, issued from a PISA survey, in order to discuss their specific contribution in elucidating the actual reasoning involved in both the student's answer and the evaluator's expectations. The mismatch between these two points of view allow us to discuss the potentiality of a situation of misunderstanding. Investigating how specific tasks in particular contexts are interpreted provides a contribution to methodological approaches treating thinking processes as situated and socially negotiated from a diversity of points of views, as for\nexample Inhelder\u2019s (1962) microgenetic approach. In order to extend such analysis to interpretations of discourse, an interdisciplinary approach combining argumentation theory and socio-cognitive psychology is needed. Here, we observed for instance that students may provide the expected answers and still interpret the question or\nproblem differently from the task\u2019s designers (or \u201cteacher\u201d). The meaning of language and other signs, such as graphs or mathematical symbols, cannot be taken for granted when several interlocutors are involved. This issue chiefly concerns argumentation theory, since it raises the question of the integration of specific contexts and points of\nview in the analysis of argumentation. Therefore, argumentation should be analysed also as a process, and not only as a product ; For more detail on this distinction, see for instance Grize (1996) and Kuhn & Udell (2003, 2007). This increase will cause an overexploitation of our ecosystem. Already now there are some countries that consume more resources than their lands can provide, while some others live in poor conditions. With the increase of the population, we will put even more pressure on our ecosystem and some countries will suffer more than others. For this reason, a new model of development is necessary, and a sustainable one is desirable. In order to have a sustainable development all the actors of the society are trying to find solutions and in the future they will have to try even harder. It will be not enough that just a single actor will do something but all the society together will have to contribute to this change. This paper tries to evaluate whether a model based on gamification technique would motivate people in behaving in a more sustainable way. Past researches declare that consumers are aware of the sustainable issue and they would like to behave in a sustainable way. However, their willingness is not always transformed into a sustainable behaviour. Therefore, it has been developed a model which use game mechanics to drive consumer behaviour toward a sustainable one. Motivation is crucial for changing people behaviour and gamification, which implies the use of game elements and mechanics in other contexts, has proved to be a powerful motivational tool. Hence, a sustainable gamified system has been developed on a paper prototype and has been tested by ten potential users. The target of the gamified system are students. Data collection has been conducted in the following way: first, it has been developed a gamified system and then it has been designed on a paper prototype. After that, potential users of the tool have tested the model and have answered questions in a semi-structured interview in order to understand if the gamified system would help them doing more sustainable actions. The main results tell us that a gamified system helps to motivate students in having a sustainable behaviour. However, it is mainly effective for people that have already a strong sustainable attitude. The main purpose of this study is to extend the  literature regarding the psychometric properties of two screening tools, the First Year Inventory (FYI) and the Quantitative- CHecklist for Autism in Toddler (Q-CHAT), testing their criterion validity. They were administered during a three-wave approach  involving the general population. At T1, 657 children were tested with the FYI and 36 of them were found to be at risk. At T2,  545 were tested with the Q-CHAT and 29 of them were found to be at risk. At T3, 12 out of the 36 children with a high score on  the FYI and 11 out of the 29 children with a high score on the Q-CHAT were compared to 15 typically developing children. The  criterion validity was tested considering the severity of the autistic symptoms, emotional/behavioral problems, and limited global  functioning as criteria. Accuracy parameters were also calculated. Furthermore, we investigated which dimension of each  questionnaire better predicted the aforementioned criterion. January"}],"abstracts":[{"value":"Background - Delayed prescription is a strategy used in various countries to reduce antibiotic overuse and contend the effects of antibiotic resistance; however this practice is not yet used in Switzerland. The present qualitative study was thus conducted to investigate Swiss patients\u2019 attitudes towards the possible implementation of delayed prescription. Method - Five focus groups with the general population based on a fixed script of questions to elicit opinions on delayed prescription. Results - A total of 29 participants were involved (M\u2009=\u200939,76 years of age, SD\u2009=\u200915,91; 19 females). Participants naturally polarized into two distinct groups: one expressing attitudes against delayed prescription and the other in favor of such practice. One driver for their opposing stance was their pre-existing negative attitudes about the use of antibiotics. Other relevant themes contributing to the formation of one\u2019s opinion on delayed prescription included the participants\u2019 perceived convenience of this prescribing practice and their desired level of autonomy during and after a medical encounter. Another theme that emerged was the potential impact of these stances on the interpersonal relationship between doctors and their patients. Conclusion - The present study highlights the existence of several barriers and facilitators perceived by patients. Should delayed prescription be implemented in Switzerland, these results will inform policymakers about patients\u2019 attitudes towards the practice.
