However, forecasts from statistical models (e.g. species distribution models) rarely consider that plant community changes could substantially lag behind climatic changes, hindering our ability to make temporally realistic projections for the coming century. Indeed, the magnitudes of lags, and the relative importance of the different factors giving rise to them, remain poorly understood. We review evidence for three types of lag: \"dispersal lags\" affecting plant species' spread along elevational gradients, \"establishment lags\" following their arrival in recipient communities, and \"extinction lags\" of resident species. Variation in lags is explained by variation among species in physiological and demographic responses, by effects of altered biotic interactions, and by aspects of the physical environment. Of these, altered biotic interactions could contribute substantially to establishment and extinction lags, yet impacts of biotic interactions on range dynamics are poorly understood. We develop a mechanistic community model to illustrate how species turnover in future communities might lag behind simple expectations based on species' range shifts with unlimited dispersal. The model shows a combined contribution of altered biotic interactions and dispersal lags to plant community turnover along an elevational gradient following climate warming. Our review and simulation support the view that accounting for disequilibrium range dynamics will be essential for realistic forecasts of patterns of biodiversity under climate change, with implications for the conservation of mountain species and the ecosystem functions they research. - 2016"}],"abstracts":[{"value":"BACKGROUND\nNew regulations by the Swiss Federal Food Safety and Veterinary Office provide for the monitoring of breed health by Swiss breeding clubs. In collaboration with the Swiss Bernese Mountain Dog Club, the purpose of this study was to investigate the causes of death in purebred dogs registered by the club and born in 2001 and 2002.\n\n\nRESULTS\nOf a total of 1290 Bernese mountain dogs (BMDs) born in 2001 and 2002 in Switzerland, data was collected from owners and veterinarians using a questionnaire designed for this study from 389 dogs (30.2\u00a0%). By the end of the study, 381/389 dogs (97.9\u00a0%) had died. The median life expectancy of all dogs was 8.4\u00a0years (IQR, 6.9-9.7). Female dogs had a significantly longer median survival (8.8\u00a0years; IQR, 7.1-10.3) than male dogs (7.7\u00a0years; IQR, 6.6-9.3) (P\u2009<\u20090.00). The cause of death was unknown in 89/381 dogs (23.4\u00a0%). For the remaining dogs, the most frequent causes of death were neoplasia (222/381, 58.3\u00a0%), degenerative joint disease (16/381, 4.2\u00a0%), spinal disorders (13/381, 3.4\u00a0%), renal injury (12/381, 3.1\u00a0%), and gastric or mesenteric volvulus (7/381, 1.8\u00a0%). However, large numbers of dogs were diagnosed with neoplasia without histopathologic or cytologic confirmation. Dogs with neoplasms had a shorter median survival than dogs with other disorders. The shortest median survival (6.8\u00a0years) was found for dogs with renal injury.\n\n\nCONCLUSIONS\nFindings of this study confirm a high prevalence of neoplasia and associated low life expectancy in BMDs. To support elk management decisions, the SAVANNA ecosystem model was adapted to explore interactions between elk herbivory and aspen dynamics. The simulated probability of successful vegetative regeneration for senescent aspen stands declines sharply when elk densities reach levels of 3-5 elk/km2, depending on model assumptions for the seasonal duration of elk foraging activities. For aspen stands with a substantial component of younger trees, the simulated regeneration probability declines more continuously with increasing elk density, dropping below 50% from densities at 8-14 elk/km2. At the landscape scale, simulated aspen regeneration probability under a scenario of extensive seasonal use was little affected by elk population level, when this level was above 300-600 elk (25%-50% current population) over the ca. 107 km2 winter range. This was because elk distribution was highly aggregated, so that a high density of elk occupied certain areas, even at low population levels overall. At approximately current elk population levels (1000-1200 elk), only 35%-45% of senescent aspen stands are simulated as having at least a 90% probability of regeneration, nearly all of them located on the periphery of the winter range. 2007"}],"abstracts":[{"value":"We evaluated 4 men who had benign paroxysmal positional vertigo (BPPV) that occured several hours after intensive mountain biking but without head trauma. The positional maneuvers in the planes of the posterior and horizontal canals elicited BPPV, as well as transitory nystagmus. This was attributed to both the posterior and horizontal semicircular canals (SCCs) on the left side in 1 patient, in these 2 SCCs on the right side in another patient, and to the right posterior SCC in the other 2 patients. The symptoms disappeared after physiotherapeutic maneuvers in 2 patients and spontaneously in the other 2 patients. Cross-country or downhill mountain biking generates frequent vibratory impacts, which are only partially filtered through the suspension fork and the upper parts of the body. Biomechanically, during a moderate jump, before landing, the head is subjected to an acceleration close to negative 1 g, and during impact it is subjected to an upward acceleration of more than 2g. Repeated acceleration-deceleration events during intensive off-road biking might generate displacement and/or dislocation of otoconia from the otolithic organs, inducing the typical symptoms of BPPV. Snow depth records, however, are  sparse in high-mountain terrains. Here, we present data processing techniques to  approximate the thermal insulation effect of snow cover. We propose some simple  \u2018snow thermal insulation indices\u2019 using daily and weekly variations in ground surface  temperatures (GSTs), as well as a \u2018snow melt index\u2019 that approximates the snow melt  rate using a degree-day approach with air temperature during the zero curtain period.  The indices consider point-specific characteristics and allow the reconstruction of past  snow thermal conditions and snow melt rates using long GST time series. The aims of this study were (i) to describe the performance trends and (ii) to analyze the age-related performance decline in ultraendurance mountain biking in a 120-km ultraendurance mountain bike race the \"Swiss Bike Masters\" from 1995 to 2009 in 9,325 male athletes. The mean (\u00b1SD) race time decreased from 590 \u00b1 80 min to 529 \u00b1 88 min for overall finishers and from 415 \u00b1 8 min to 359 \u00b1 16 min for the top 10 finishers, respectively. The mean (\u00b1SD) age of all finishers significantly (P < 0.001) increased from 31.6 \u00b1 6.5 years to 37.9 \u00b1 8.9 years, while the age of the top 10 remained stable at 30.0 \u00b1 1.6 years. The race time of mountain bikers aged between 25 and 34 years was significantly (P < 0.01) faster compared with the race time of older age groups. Recent studies have shown that disturbed sleep at altitude, one of the five symptoms scored for AMS, is more likely due to altitude hypoxia per se, and is not closely related to AMS. To address this issue, and also to evaluate the Lake Louise AMS score in light of decades of experience, experts in high altitude research undertook to revise the score. We here present an international consensus statement resulting from online discussions and meetings at the International Society of Mountain Medicine World Congress in Bolzano, Italy, in May 2014 and at the International Hypoxia Symposium in Lake Louise, Canada, in February 2015. Several regulatory mechanisms have also been reported during this type of event and the changes in PC at different points of MUM remain unknown. The purpose of this study was to investigate the time course of PC during an extreme MUM. We tested the hypothesis that PC alteration would not increase linearly. Methods: 16 participants (age 45.1 \u00b1 9.6 years) were tested bipedaly on a posturographic platform for 51.2 s with eyes open every \u223c50 km. Both traditional and stabilogram diffusion analyses (SDA) were performed. A visual analog scale (VAS) was used for a subjective evaluation of global fatigue, sleep feeling and pain. Results: The main parameters (center of pressure trajectory analysis) increased significantly (p < 0.001, d = 1.56, very large) until km 100. This was confirmed by SDA in the antero-posterior plane. Short term effective diffusion coefficient significantly increased (p < 0.001, d = 1.07, very large) as critical point (p < 0.01, d = 1.57, very large). From km 100 to 200, a different response was observed with a continuous decrease in most of the PC parameters. This was confirmed by SDA in the antero-posterior plane. Short term effective diffusion coefficient significantly increased (p < 0.001, d = 1.39, very large) as critical point (p < 0.01, d = 1.51, very large). Conclusion: Posture alteration is progressively increased until 100 km. After this point, compensatory mechanisms appear to limit the posture degradation. This bi-phasic response is of interest for better understanding the coping with extreme
